If there is one good thing about the Transformers, excluding the sheer intensity of the battles for a moment, it is the character’s backgrounds and relationships with one another that keeps the show, especially in my opinion “Transformers prime, running in our minds smoothly. And even though the show met its end in 2013, I still think analysis on the characters can still be done. I have actually done two evaluations prior to this one revolving around the two characters in the gif above, and by popular demand, I am back!
Now, any fans of Transformers Prime know that the ending, which was Predacons rising, left many plot holes but honestly I’m not going to focus on that.
The final scene in which we see Megatron is the one where he confesses:
“Because I now know the true meaning of oppression, and have thus lost my taste for inflicting it”
Many fans didn’t agree with this ending where Megatron just…well…leaves. But there IS more to it than that. Megatron strides to stand in front of Optimus, and gazes over at him. For one time, after eon upon eon of battling, they exchange a glance that is not laced with hatred or rage. But perhaps what makes me curious and even sorrowful the most, is that when Megatron sees that Optimus is watching him, he turns away and keeps optic-contact with him at a minimum. Yes, he is actually talking to Starscream but, judging by this, he is talking to Optimus. He wants Optimus to hear what he is saying.
In short, it is Megatron’s way of assuring Optimus that he has no desire to harm another.
He knows what will happen to the Prime after he leaves and he knows Optimus Prime will leave the land of the living to allow others to live. He had to not only endure Unicron’s torment, but he also had to watch Optimus consume the Allspark into his own spark.
Megatron speaks like this because after all of the years of knowing Orion Pax and Optimus Prime…
…He cannot bring himself to say goodbye...
